The Rottweiler descends from powerful mastiff-type dogs that drove and guarded cattle in Germany. Eventually, a strong, trustworthy dog evolved that came to be known as the butcher's dog of Rottweiler, a market town where the breed was most commonly found and from which it takes its name. The dog guarded the butcher's money when the pair were en route to the cattle sales, and drove the livestock home on the return trip. With the advent of better roads and the invention of mechanized transportation, however, the courageous dogs were no longer needed and might have disappeared altogether had it not been for an interest in preserving rare and unusual breeds. This is a powerful, smooth-coated dog. Males measure from 24 to 27 inches at the shoulder; females 2 inches less. The coat is harsh and black, with rich tan markings. Grooming consists of thorough weekly brushing. A devoted family and protection dog, the Rottweiler needs lots of daily outdoor exercise. The breed has proven to be an able police dog and does well in obedience. The Rottweiler is a smart, strong-willed dog, so begin training early and provide plenty of socialization.
