Contrary to popular belief, this is not the miniaturized version of the Doberman Pinscher but a much older German breed that has been known in that country for at least 300 years. It is thought that breeders developed it by crossing the German smooth-haired Pinscher with smaller breeds, possibly the Italian Greyhound and the smooth Dachshund. Used originally as an efficient barnyard ratter, the breed is now a popular companion dog, noted for its smart, lively personality and high-stepping hackney gait. The Min Pin looks fragile but it's quite rugged for its size and makes a playful pet for older children. The breed stands 10 to 12.5 inches at the shoulder. The ears are erect, and usually cropped to a sharp point. The coat is smooth, hard, short and glossy and may be solid red, black or brown with rich tan markings. Grooming and exercise needs are minimal, met with a couple of short daily walks and a weekly brushing. The Min Pin is an excellent watchdog for any size home.
